Clunking Over Bumps: Prepare for a Suspension Assessment

A clunk over bumps needs assessment rather than a guessed strut, link or other part. Describe where it occurs, recent impacts or work and any steering, braking or handling changes.

At a glance

A clunk over bumps needs assessment rather than a guessed strut, link or other part. Describe where it occurs, recent impacts or work and any steering, braking or handling changes. If control is affected or a wheel appears displaced, stop safely and seek professional assistance.

  • Describe the location and type of sound already noticed.
  • Include turning, braking and impact history.
  • Confirm inspection findings before a suspension-parts quote.

Locate the sound as closely as you can

Describe front or rear, left or right, and whether the noise is a single knock or repeated rattle. Include the circumstances from ordinary driving already completed. Do not seek rough roads, drive over curbs or make abrupt manoeuvres just to reproduce it.

Mention turning, braking and load

A sound heard while turning may require a different assessment from one heard only on uneven pavement. Mention whether normal braking or carrying passengers previously changed it. These observations help define the complaint but do not prove which component is responsible.

  • Does it also happen on smooth roads?
  • Was anything loose or recently moved in the vehicle?

Bring the recent-work and impact history

Share suspension, steering or tire invoices and any pothole, curb or collision history. Note whether the noise appeared immediately afterwards or later. Avoid reaching under an unsupported vehicle or trying to judge a joint's condition by shaking components at home.

Shocks, struts and suspension noise: inspect first

One possible source of a metallic clunk is movement at loose or worn shock/strut mountings or bushings, rather than a failed damper itself. In its guide to noise after shock or strut replacement, Monroe explains why mounting hardware and other suspension parts need inspection even when the replacement unit is new. That example does not identify the cause on your vehicle; recent repair history and a physical inspection still matter.

A clunk is not enough to order shocks or struts. Call Father Auto with the vehicle details, mileage and noise pattern to discuss a suspension assessment. Ask for the inspection scope and charge, then the findings and repair options. Clarify whether any recommended alignment is included or quoted separately.

Common questions

Does a clunk mean I need new struts?

No. The sound alone cannot identify a part. Describe the circumstances and ask for findings before approving a strut or another component replacement.

Can I keep driving if it only happens over bumps?

That timing does not establish safety. Arrange an assessment, and stop using the vehicle if control is affected, damage is apparent or the symptom follows a serious impact.

Would an alignment remove the noise?

Do not assume so. Ask whether component condition should be assessed first. Wheel-angle adjustment does not replace a damaged or worn component.
