At a glance
Suddenly heavy steering, a steering-loss message or difficulty controlling direction needs prompt attention. Stop safely and follow your vehicle manual before planning another drive. Describe whether the change is sudden, intermittent or longstanding and share exact warnings so the correct steering assessment can be discussed.
- Distinguish sudden loss of assistance from a longstanding feel.
- Record the exact warning and when it appeared.
- Confirm the steering system before selecting a repair.
Separate a sudden change from a long-standing feel
Tell the shop whether assistance changed abruptly, became intermittent or has felt heavy for some time. Report observations from driving already completed, including whether parking-speed turns felt different. Do not take an affected vehicle for another drive to compare speeds.
Read the exact dashboard message
Messages such as steering loss and steering-assist fault can require different responses. Follow your own model's instructions; another manufacturer's manual is only an example. If steering control is compromised, arrange professional assistance and safe transport rather than driving to a service appointment.
Hydraulic or electric power steering? The system matters
Steering systems differ, including electric assistance and hydraulic arrangements. A generic fluid top-up or reset instruction may be unsuitable for your vehicle. Share recent battery, steering or wheel work and any other warnings so the assessment can consider the full sequence.
- Note unusual turning noise already heard
- Mention a recent curb or pothole impact
Make a focused steering assessment enquiry
Provide year, make, model, powertrain and when the symptom began. Ask Father Auto about assessment scope, charges and arrival arrangements. Request the findings before approving parts, and clarify whether any related suspension or alignment work is separate from the proposed steering repair.
Have these details ready when you call
- Sudden, intermittent or persistent heaviness
- Exact steering and other warning messages
- Parking-speed observations already noticed
- Recent battery, steering or wheel work
- Vehicle details, impact history and parked location

Contact UsCommon questions
Can I drive if I can still turn the wheel?
Being able to turn it does not establish that continued driving is safe. Follow the warning and manual, and seek professional help if assistance or control has changed.
Should I add power-steering fluid?
First identify the system and consult the vehicle's manual. Some vehicles use electric assistance, and adding an unsuitable fluid is not a diagnosis or universal fix.
Does restarting the car solve the problem?
A warning disappearing after a restart does not establish that the cause is resolved. Report the intermittent behaviour and arrange the appropriate assessment.
