Uneven Tire Wear: What the Pattern Can Tell a Technician
Uneven tread wear is evidence to investigate, not a diagnosis by itself. Pressure history, rotation, alignment, balance and suspension condition may matter.

At a glance
Uneven tread wear is evidence to investigate, not a diagnosis by itself. Pressure history, rotation, alignment, balance and suspension condition may matter. Identify the affected tires and wear areas; visible bulges, exposed cords or significant damage require prompt professional help instead of continued use.
- Record wheel position and inner, outer, centre or patchy wear.
- Share pressure, rotation and impact history.
- Separate existing damage from future wear prevention.
Inside-edge, outside-edge or patchy tire wear
Identify the wheel position and whether wear appears on the inner edge, outer edge, centre or in patches. Compare what is visible without crawling beneath the car. A technician's measurements can reveal differences that are hard to judge from a photo.
- Identify each affected wheel position.
- Describe inside-edge, outside-edge, centre or patchy wear without assuming the cause.
Include pressure and rotation history
Share recent measured cold pressures and the last known rotation, if applicable. The vehicle's tire label and manual guide pressure and rotation requirements. Do not change pressure to a guessed value because of a wear pattern, or assume rotation is suitable for every tire arrangement.
Explain impacts and handling changes
Mention a pothole or curb impact, recent wheel work, pulling or vibration. Several concerns may occur together, so ask whether tire condition and related components should be assessed before an alignment. Alignment and balancing perform different jobs and are not interchangeable remedies.
Separate existing wear from future prevention
An alignment or rotation cannot replace tread that has already worn away. Ask whether the tires remain suitable for use and whether replacement is needed alongside corrective work. Request a quote that identifies each proposed service, its purpose and any findings that affect the recommendation.
Have these details ready when you call

- Recent cold-pressure readings
- Last rotation and wheel-work history
- Pothole or curb impact details

Contact UsCommon questions
Does inside-edge wear prove bad alignment?
It can prompt an alignment assessment, but a visible pattern alone is not conclusive. Tire pressure, vehicle history and related component condition should be considered together.
Will rotating the tires fix the worn tread?
No. Rotation changes positions when appropriate for the vehicle; it cannot restore missing tread. Ask about tire suitability and the cause of the uneven wear.
Can I send a photo before calling?
A safely taken photo can help explain the concern. Include wheel position and history, while recognising that measurements and an assessment are still needed for a recommendation.
