At a glance
Arrange a used-car inspection with seller permission, vehicle access and an agreed scope before committing to a purchase. Combine the findings with records and history. An inspection has limits and does not guarantee hidden faults or replace separate requirements for an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate.
- Agree access, report format and who authorizes the work.
- Bring the listing, history and maintenance records.
- Resolve findings while recognizing inspection limits.
Agree on access with the seller
Confirm that the seller permits an independent inspection and who will bring the vehicle to the Scarborough shop. Arrange the appointment before travel and explain any access restrictions. If the car cannot be operated legally or safely, discuss transport arrangements instead of assuming it can be driven.
- Make the vehicle and keys available for the agreed appointment.
- Confirm who receives and pays for the assessment.
Used-car mechanical inspection: agree on scope
Before booking, ask which checks are included, whether a road assessment is appropriate and how findings will be delivered. Identify your concerns, such as a warning light, noise or apparent leak. An agreed scope helps you understand which purchase questions the appointment can address.
- Ask whether inaccessible areas create limitations.
- Confirm how additional diagnostic testing would be authorized.
Bring history and compare the information
Request available maintenance records and review the vehicle history separately. Give the inspector the VIN, kilometres and questions raised by the listing or seller. Mechanical observations and records complement each other; an inspection alone does not establish ownership, lien status or every detail of previous damage.
- Bring the listing and any available service invoices.
- Tell the shop about discrepancies you want discussed.
Read findings before making the decision
Ask which items need prompt attention, which may be future maintenance and which require further investigation. Consider follow-up estimates when assessing the purchase. A pre-purchase inspection is distinct from an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate; confirm separately what documentation the transaction requires and who will arrange it.
- Keep the report and note its limitations.
- Resolve important unanswered questions before committing.

Contact UsCommon questions
Does a pre-purchase inspection guarantee the car?
No. It provides findings within an agreed scope at that time. Hidden or intermittent faults and future issues may remain.
Is this the same as a Safety Standards Certificate?
No. They serve different purposes. Confirm any required safety certification separately; do not assume it is included.
Should the seller’s permission be arranged first?
Yes. Confirm access, transport and appointment arrangements before booking or travelling with the vehicle.
