Compare new and used tires by suitable fitment, tire category, condition and known history alongside the full installed price. A used option may have information gaps that matter. Ask for the exact model, specification and purchase terms before deciding which available option suits your vehicle.
- Compare options that meet the same vehicle needs.
- Ask about condition, age and known history.
- Include fitting and actual purchase terms in the total.
Compare options that meet the same vehicle needs
Begin with the vehicle specification and the reason for buying: worn tires, one damaged tire or a seasonal set. Ask for each option’s exact model, size, ratings and quantity. Comparing an unsuitable tire with a suitable one does not become useful just because the first price is lower.
- Describe your typical routes and seasonal driving.
- Include AWD or different front and rear sizes in the fitment discussion.
Used-tire history and internal condition matter
USTMA warns that a used tire’s maintenance, storage and repair history may be unknown. Some damage can only be identified by a qualified professional inspecting the tire internally after it is removed from the wheel. Ask how condition is assessed and which history gaps remain; good-looking tread does not answer every question.
- Request measured tread and the manufacture date.
- Ask about prior repairs, uneven wear, damage and known use history.
For winter use, assess the specific tire and the set
A used tire is not suitable for winter solely because the listing calls it a winter tire. Check markings, condition and the relevant maker’s guidance. Transport Canada recommends winter tires in sets of four and cautions against tires worn close to 4 mm on snow-covered roads. This is winter-use guidance, not a statement of Ontario’s legal inspection minimum.
- Confirm the required matching and fitment for your vehicle.
- Compare the complete set’s condition, rather than one attractive tread photo.
Compare installed totals and actual purchase terms
Ask Father Auto for a suitable new option and any available used alternative with the same fitting scope. Include mounting, balancing, required valve or TPMS work, applicable charges and tax. Ask what product terms are actually offered and what the inspection establishes; do not infer a warranty, guaranteed remaining mileage or return policy from the price.
- Confirm current availability before coming to Scarborough.
- Keep the tire specification and agreed terms with the invoice.

Contact UsCommon questions
Are used tires always better value because they cost less?
The initial price is one part of the decision. Compare suitable fitment, measured condition, history, fitting costs and actual terms; remaining service life cannot be guaranteed from a tread photo.
Can a used tire inspection remove every uncertainty?
No. An inspection can assess condition within its scope, but unknown maintenance or storage history can remain. Ask which findings and limitations affect the purchase decision.
Should I compare a two-tire winter price with a four-tire quote?
Compare the same quantity and scope. Transport Canada recommends winter tires in sets of four, so discuss a suitable complete arrangement before choosing on price.
