Tire Age and DOT Date Code: When to Ask About Replacement
The tire date code identifies when a tire was manufactured, not whether it remains suitable for use. A modern four-digit code gives the production week and year.

At a glance
The tire date code identifies when a tire was manufactured, not whether it remains suitable for use. A modern four-digit code gives the production week and year. Consider that age together with condition, history and the relevant manufacturer guidance before discussing inspection or replacement.
- Record the code on each safely accessible tire.
- Consider damage, condition and known history together.
- Apply the relevant manufacturer guidance.
DOT tire date code: read the manufacture date
Look for the final four manufacture-date digits associated with the DOT marking on the tire sidewall. For example, 0822 means week eight of 2022. Record the code rather than guessing from the tire’s appearance. If it is inaccessible, ask the shop to identify it during an assessment.
- Photograph markings only where they can be reached safely.
- Check each tire rather than assuming all share one date.
Consider age alongside condition and history
A date cannot tell you how a tire was used or stored. Share any visible damage, uneven wear, pressure loss or handling changes with the shop. Ask for condition to be assessed as part of the discussion instead of treating remaining tread as a complete answer.
- Include spare and stored seasonal tires in your questions.
- Mention any known period of prolonged storage.
Use the relevant maker’s guidance
Replacement guidance varies. Michelin recommends annual professional inspections after five years of use and precautionary replacement ten years after manufacture. These are Michelin recommendations, not an Ontario legal age rule. Check the guidance for your tire and vehicle, including any earlier replacement requirement or condition concern.
- Identify the tire brand and model.
- Ask which manufacturer recommendation applies to your set.
Plan inspection or replacement with clear details
Give the shop the date codes, fitment information and reason for your enquiry. If replacement is recommended, ask about suitable options, required quantity and the installed total. Confirm availability before travelling from elsewhere in Toronto or the GTA to the Scarborough shop.
- Request the reason behind any replacement recommendation.
- Keep the date and tire details with your service records.
Have these details ready when you call

Contact UsCommon questions
Does the date code show when the tire was installed?
No. It identifies manufacture timing. Installation date and service history are separate information.
Is there one Ontario age limit for every tire?
Do not treat a manufacturer’s replacement recommendation as an Ontario legal age rule. Consult the applicable tire and vehicle guidance.
Can a tire with plenty of tread still need replacement?
Yes. Age and condition also matter. Ask for an assessment when damage, deterioration or a relevant maker’s recommendation raises concern.
