At a glance
A temperature warning, hot-range gauge or steam calls for a safe stop and the instructions in your vehicle manual. Continuing toward a repair shop can worsen the problem. Keep clear of hot coolant and leave hot cooling-system caps closed while arranging professional assistance and assessment.
- Respond to the warning before planning travel.
- Leave hot cooling-system caps closed.
- Record the sequence and warnings without guessing a failed part.
Respond to the warning before the repair call
Follow the exact dashboard message and manufacturer instructions, including switching the vehicle off when directed. Do not keep restarting it to see whether the warning returns. Smoke, fire or immediate danger requires emergency assistance, not a routine service enquiry.
Leave hot cooling-system caps closed
Do not open a radiator or coolant-reservoir cap while the system is hot. Pressurised steam and liquid can cause severe burns. Avoid reaching near fans or other moving parts, and do not use a guessed cooling time as permission to open the system.
Record the sequence, not a suspected part
From a safe location, note the warning wording, when it began and whether there was visible leakage or steam. Say if it occurred in slow traffic, during an ordinary journey or after recent cooling work. These details help frame the assessment without identifying a failed component remotely.
Cooling-system diagnosis before a radiator repair
Call with the year, make, model and engine or powertrain type. Ask about assessment scope, charges and safe vehicle-arrival arrangements. Request the findings and a separate repair quote before authorising work; an overheating symptom alone does not justify one particular repair.
Have these details ready when you call
- Exact temperature warning or gauge behaviour
- When the warning began and whether it returned
- Steam or visible leakage, observed safely
- Recent coolant work or repeated top-ups
- Vehicle details and current parked location

Contact UsCommon questions
Can I drive after the temperature drops?
A cooler gauge does not establish that the cause has been resolved. Follow your vehicle's manual and seek professional advice about transport rather than assuming another drive is safe.
Does overheating mean the radiator needs replacement?
Not necessarily. An assessment is needed to identify the cause and any resulting damage. Ask for findings before deciding which repair to approve.
Should I open the cap to check coolant?
Never open a hot pressurised cooling system. Use your model's instructions for any permitted checks after it has cooled, or leave the check to a professional.
