At a glance
A check-engine light needs vehicle-specific interpretation. Record whether it is steady, flashing or intermittent and note any shaking, power loss or other warning. Follow your own manual promptly: the light and stored codes are starting points for diagnosis, not proof that a named part needs replacement.
- Record the exact warning behaviour.
- Report changes in engine operation alongside the light.
- Agree the diagnostic testing and approval scope.
Describe the light’s actual behaviour
Tell the shop whether the light remains on with the engine running, flashes, appears intermittently or only shows during startup. Photograph any accompanying message while safely parked. Warning behaviour and instructions vary by vehicle; an example from another model should not override your own manual.
- Mention when the light first appeared.
- Record other warnings and any change in how the engine runs.
A flashing light needs prompt attention
Ford’s published warning guidance describes flashing during running as a possible misfire on the covered vehicle. The response still depends on your model and symptoms. If the vehicle is shaking badly, losing power or difficult to control, stop safely and arrange assistance rather than driving to a diagnostic appointment.
- Follow your manual’s specific warning instructions.
- Do not keep driving just to see whether the light clears.
Check-engine code reading is the start of diagnosis
A stored code can direct the diagnostic process, but a code name is not a complete explanation of why a system reported a fault. Ask what testing is proposed, what it aims to establish and how results will be communicated before authorizing replacement parts.
- Share previous scan reports, if available.
- Do not erase codes simply to hide the warning before assessment.
Set a clear diagnostic authorization
Call Father Auto to discuss diagnostic scope and appointment arrangements at the Scarborough shop. Explain any recent repair or maintenance that preceded the light. Ask about the initial assessment charge, further testing authorization and a separate repair quote once findings are available.
- Tell the shop whether the vehicle is currently drivable or requires transport.
- Ask what information you will receive after the agreed assessment.

Contact UsCommon questions
Does a steady light mean it is safe to drive?
Not automatically. Follow the vehicle manual and consider the accompanying symptoms. A phone description cannot establish that the vehicle is safe to continue driving.
Can a code identify the replacement part?
A code supports testing but does not by itself confirm a failed part. Ask for the findings that justify a repair recommendation.
Should I clear the light before my appointment?
Do not erase the warning just to hide it. Preserve existing scan information and tell the shop if codes have already been cleared.
