At a glance
Request an on-rim changeover if your seasonal tires are already mounted on compatible wheels; loose tires need mounting and balancing. Confirm tire condition, fitment, TPMS requirements and the complete quote before arranging a winter visit.
Planning a winter tire change starts with two questions: what conditions will you be driving in, and is your second tire set already mounted on its own wheels? Answering both helps you request the correct work and compare quotes that cover the same scope. A calendar date alone does not describe your tire condition, fitment or seasonal setup.
Plan before winter conditions arrive
Transport Canada explains that cold conditions affect tire performance and recommends winter tires at all wheel positions for winter control. Its Riding on Air guide also explains the mountain-and-snowflake marking. Check expected weather and your driving needs in advance rather than waiting for a snowy morning to begin asking about availability.
Confirm a service time with the shop. An online enquiry does not reserve an appointment, and seasonal demand does not establish a guaranteed completion time. Mention any urgent condition, pressure loss or existing damage when you call.
Identify your wheel setup
Two complete wheel-and-tire sets: request an on-rim seasonal changeover and provide the wheel and tire details. Loose tires sharing one wheel set: ask about off-rim mounting and balancing. These involve different work, so the lowest headline price may not represent the same service.
A separate wheel set still needs to meet vehicle requirements. Bridgestone’s winter-tire guidance discusses dedicated wheels and accounting for tire-pressure monitoring equipment. Tell the shop whether the wheels have been used on this vehicle before; appearance or a matching diameter alone is not a fitment confirmation.
Compare the complete quote
- Number of tires, full tire specification and whether the set is on rims.
- Vehicle-specific compatibility and the condition of the tires and wheels.
- Mounting, balancing, valves and any applicable sensor work.
- Whether customer-supplied tires are accepted and any assessment required.
- Applicable tax and other stated charges, including disposal if replacement is involved.
Ask which TPMS procedure, if any, applies to your vehicle and wheel set. A reset, relearn, sensor programming and sensor replacement are different requests. Report an existing warning before the change rather than assuming the seasonal swap will resolve it.
What to bring and arrange
Bring the complete set agreed with the shop, a locking-wheel-nut key if used, and any wheel hardware the shop asks you to supply. Share previous pressure or vibration concerns. Arrange transport and storage for the removed set; storage at the shop is not established by a changeover enquiry.
After fitting, follow the vehicle and wheel manufacturer’s pressure, maintenance and any fastener recheck guidance supplied for your setup. Report new warning lights or unusual vibration. Winter tires support seasonal traction, but driving speed and following distance still need to match road conditions.
