Tire Size, Load Index and Speed Rating: Read the Fitment Details
A tire size is only the starting point for fitment. Load index, speed rating and the approved wheel-and-tire arrangement also matter.

At a glance
A tire size is only the starting point for fitment. Load index, speed rating and the approved wheel-and-tire arrangement also matter. Use the vehicle label and manual, then share the full markings, vehicle and wheel setup before comparing new, used or seasonal options.
- Record complete size, load and speed markings.
- Check the vehicle label and approved arrangement.
- Share different front/rear sizes and relevant vehicle details.
Read a tire size such as 205/55R16
In this example, 205 is the width in millimetres, 55 is the sidewall height as a percentage of width, R identifies radial construction and 16 is the wheel diameter in inches. Record the complete marking, including any following numbers and letters. An example size explains the format; it is not a recommendation for your vehicle or a stock listing.
- Photograph the vehicle tire-information label if safely accessible.
- Record front and rear sizes when they differ.
Load index and speed rating complete the description
The numerical load index and letter speed rating describe operating limits under specified conditions. Michelin explains that they belong in the vehicle’s replacement-tire specification. Two tires with the same dimensions can have different ratings. Ask for an option that meets the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements rather than choosing on size alone.
- Include any XL, LT or original-equipment marking in the enquiry.
- A higher tire rating does not increase the vehicle’s permitted load.
Vehicle, trim and wheel setup still need confirmation
A model name can cover several trims and wheel arrangements. Tell the shop the year, model, trim and current setup, including separate winter wheels, factory staggered sizes or run-flat equipment. For any proposed size change, ask which vehicle-approved specification supports it; a fitment search result should not replace that check.
- Have the VIN available if the configuration is uncertain.
- Confirm wheel compatibility as well as tire specification.
Turn a size search into a useful tire quote
For a tire quote by size or vehicle model, provide the complete specification and required quantity. Ask which suitable options are currently available and request the installed total. Toronto and GTA drivers should confirm the Scarborough appointment before travelling. Keep a proposed alternate fitment separate so it can be checked against the vehicle’s requirements.
- State new, used, winter or all-season as the purchase request.
- Ask about mounting, balancing, valves, TPMS work, applicable charges and tax.
Have these details ready when you call
- Vehicle year, make, model, trim and VIN if needed
- Vehicle-label specification and complete sidewall markings
- Front/rear sizes, wheel setup and drivetrain

Contact UsCommon questions
Does 205/55R16 identify every fitment requirement?
No. It describes dimensions and construction, but the load index, speed rating and any other vehicle-specific requirements still need confirmation.
Can I choose a tire just because it fits the wheel?
Wheel diameter alone is insufficient. Confirm the vehicle-approved tire specification and compatibility of the complete wheel-and-tire arrangement.
Does a listed example size mean it is in stock?
No. The examples explain how to prepare an enquiry. Call with your specification and quantity to confirm suitable products and current availability.
